Subject: Free High Quality On-line Courses for Eugene 4J High School Students – Classes start September 4

Dear Parent or Guardian,

I am writing to notify you of an exciting opportunity available for your student. Because of a generous donation from the Eugene Education Foundation, Eugene 4J students are eligible to attend on line courses offered by the Virtual High School at no cost. These classes start on September 4th, a week before regular classes start.

Your child can sign up to attend courses that are not offered at his/her high school. These classes earn the same full credit and are as challenging and rewarding as a regular class. These classes are excellent preparation for college and are looked upon favorably by college admissions offices. Highly qualified high school teachers teach the classes and your student will be in a class with twenty other students from around the world who have a similar interest.

We have many Advanced Placement (AP) classes still available, as well as a huge variety of elective classes.

An example of the courses open right now:

  • AP Art History
  • AP Computer Science
  • AP Economics
  • AP Psychology
  • AP World History
  • AP Human Geography
  • AP Physics
  • AP Statistics
  • American Popular Music
  • Bioethics
  • Business Math
  • Criminology
  • Film and Literature
  • Genes and Disease
  • Investing in the Stock Market
  • Nuclear Physics
  • Sports and Society

A complete list of more than a hundred open VHS courses can be found at:

If you are interested in signing your student up for a VHS class, there is only a short amount of time to act: VHS classes start September 4th.

VHS classes require as much work as a regular class; often VHS classes require more writing. In addition, students need to have good organization and time management skills. This is not a self-paced class where students are completely left on their own; they report in at least weekly with their teachers and their classmates to get feedback and evaluation of progress. Generally, students who are successful in VHS classes are those who are already successful in traditional classes. VHS students will require access to a computer connected to the Internet. There is no cost to students or families to take a VHS class.
