ARTS & COMMUNICATION — CAM
Overview
In The Arts and Communication CAM, students can choose to work
in one of several focus areas. These include Fine Arts (drawing,
ceramics, photography), Graphic Design, Video and Film, Radio Broadcasting,
Journalism and Music. Students choose an area of study that meets
their interest. Teachers work closely with students using a curriculum
that is based on standards rather than seat time. Students have
an increased responsibility to meet standards, work independently,
and forge working partnerships with mentors and the larger community.
Requirements:

Humanities is the study of art and culture. This course will specifically
look at the art of film – how films are made, how to analyze
films, and how to write about films. We will view and analyze classic
and current films from different cultures and try to answer such
questions as – “What is the nature of justice, friendship,
growing older, love, war, etc.”
PUBLICATIONS/THE LAUREATE

Work with classmates to create a publication in an area of your
interest. Possible ideas include the Laureate, a science magazine,
a literary magazine, a hip hop magazine, a music magazine, a magazine
celebrating the art of drama. Students in this class will learn
about layout, writing for publication, editing, producing and working
as a team.
YEARBOOK

Prerequisite: Instructor consent
This class produces and sells a complete and accurate yearbook.
Class members develop a theme, work on the layout and design of
the book, write, edit copy and take pictures. Students will use
design & layout software as well as digital cameras. Layout
and desktop publishing skills are taught. Students are expected
to work independently, take responsibility and work outside of class
to meet deadlines.
ADVANCED VIDEO PRODUCTION

Prerequisite: Multimedia or Communications SLC and instructor consent
Through participation in this year-long class, students will have
the opportunity to explore personal interests including news production,
3D animation, etc. Students will be required to:
• Complete one community project per semester
• Complete personal projects
• Work on Lancer Communications projects
• Teach one lesson plan in an area of interest
• Formally present one project to the class

INDEPENDENT RADIO BROADCASTING

ADVANCED RADIO BROADCASTING

This course is a self-paced class in which students can develop
skills in preparing for broadcasts and strengthening on-air practices.
Technical writing of professional letters, a resumé, news
writing and underwriting announcements will be required, as will
the use of appropriate technology for research and production. Students
will produce and record a radio show as their culminating project.
COMPUTER GRAPHICS I

This is a beginning course in graphic design which explores techniques
and trends in computer generated design. Students will learn Macromedia
Freehand and Adobe Photoshop software. Studies will include design
principles, typography, layout, target marketing, and photo manipulation.

COMPUTER GRAPHICS I FOR GIRLS

The intent of of this class is to provide a safe and encouraging
environment for girls to succeed in a field typically populated
by boys. This class follows the same basic curriculum as Computer

COMPUTER GRAPHICS II

This is an advanced course in graphic design in which students
will study logo design, advertising, cereal box design, compact
disc design, and photo manipulation. Students will work with Freehand,
Photoshop, and other industry standard graphic design software.

COMPUTER GRAPHICS III/ GRAPHIC PRODUCTION STUDENT BUSINESS

This is an advanced course focusing on Photoshop techniques, composite
imaging, scanning, retouching, filter and masking techniques, and

FLASH

This is a beginning course focusing on Macromedia Flash and its
use with internet applications. Students will use Macintosh computers.

CONCERT CHOIR

Prerequisite: Audition and/or instructor consent
This ensemble will provide for advanced singers to become exposed
to the literature written especially for them. The class is designed
for beginners as well as experienced singers. Music will be drawn
from many eras and will provide a performance- rehearsal experience
for those who wish to sing this literature. Basic tone production,
theory, ear training, and history of the rehearsal literature will
be included with the course. Cost: $15 per semester and performance

WIND ENSEMBLE

Prerequisites: Audition and instructor consent
Wind Ensemble is open to musicians who have progressed to a higher
level of playing and have a sincere interest in making music at
an advanced level. This band is an “advanced” band and
will play a variety of difficult literatures equal to student's
ability. Private lessons are encouraged for students wishing to
perform with the Wind Ensemble. Members of the Wind Ensemble have
the opportunity of participating in Pep Band, which will perform
at home basketball games, pep assemblies and other “school
spirit” events.
ORCHESTRA

Prerequisite: Previous orchestra experience
The orchestra is open to string instrument players with previous
experience. The repertoire is varied and includes standard orchestral
literature from the l7th through the 20th Century. Individuals are
given the opportunity to participate in solo and ensemble competitions
and to audition for All-State and All-Northwest Orchestra.
Often, outstanding high school musicians are featured as soloists
with the orchestra. Interested piano students should contact the
instructor to determine if there is a vacancy. Career credit may
be earned through this class.
DRAWING I

This class is designed for the student who wants to learn the fundamentals
of drawing. Students will explore a variety of techniques in drawing
while experimenting with different mediums, such as pencil, pen
and charcoal. The beginning of class will focus on the basic elements
of drawing like line and value. As students develop these skills,
they will be introduced to perspective and composition. Students
will learn through hands-on projects and critiques as well as written
assignments. Assignments outside of class are to be expected.

DRAWING II

Prerequisite: Drawing I
This class is for students who want to continue to refine their
drawing skills. The class will build upon the techniques taught
in Drawing I, as well as introduce new techniques of drawing. Students
will also have an opportunity to work with a variety of drawing
mediums, such as inks, pastels and colored pencils. Students will
learn through hands-on projects and critiques as well as written
assignments. Lab Fee $15
DRAWING III

Prerequisite: Drawing II and/or instructor consent
Students will spend the year creating a portfolio of work to be
submitted for review in the spring. The students will address three
major concerns: 1) a sense of quality in his/ her work, 2) concentration
on a particular visual interest or problem and 3) the need for breadth
in formal, technical and expressive areas. The AP course is designed
for students who are seriously interested in the study of art and
who will most likely enter a higher-level art program. Each student
will create a grouping of related works for an end of the year show.

CERAMICS I

Basic procedures and processes unique to ceramics will be introduced
and skill in forming and finishing clay work will be the outcome
of this course. Students will learn to make judgments about the
aesthetic quality of ceramic forms and mastery of the core concepts
will be required. Techniques in hand building will be taught and
students will study the role of ceramics in other cultures.

CERAMICS II

Prerequisite: Ceramics I
Students in this course will continue working with hand building,
glazing and firing techniques to produce finished pieces of functional
and/or sculptural ceramics. They will also learn and practice basic
wheel throwing techniques in order to create simple cylinder and
bowl shapes. Lab Fee: $15.
PHOTOGRAPHY I
FA . 5 Credit

This is a course in basic photographic techniques. Areas of emphasis
include composition, camera functions and developing. Students should
provide their own 35mm SLR manual camera. Lab Fee: $15.
PHOTOGRAPHY II

Prerequisite: Photography I
This is a semester long course focusing on advanced photographic
techniques. Class projects are centered around students learning
new creative and technical skills with the camera and in the darkroom.
Students will also learn how to manipulate photographic images on
the computer. Lab Fee: $15.
