PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The Physical Education requirement is 1.0 credit hours. Students
can select from the elective class offerings and complete the requirement
anytime during their 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade year. The Physical
Education program is designed to meet every student's needs and
interests. The major emphasis is on fitness and education for an
active, healthy lifestyle. All classes require the completion of
the Fitnessgram pre and post assessment, which is part of the Certificate
of Initial Mastery for Physical Education. A variety of activities
are offered each semester, with all classes, with the exception
of Advanced Physical Education, being one semester in length or
.5 credits. The Advanced Physical Education class is only .25 credits
for 9 weeks and a student can take this class only one time for
Physical Education credit. If a student repeats this class, they
then earn elective credit.

These classes can be repeated until the full year requirement is
fulfilled. Note: This does not apply to the Advanced Physical Education
class.
WEIGHT TRAINING/
CONDITIONING

Prerequisite: Teacher approval needed for 9th grade
This is a fitness-oriented course designed to help you make a personal
assessment and structure individual goals in the areas of cardiovascular
fitness, strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, exercise and
weight control and correct exercises to accomplish specific purposes.
Activities will include jogging/running etc, weight training and
circuit training which includes a variety of exercises.
PE SELECT

Activities offered in this class are selected by the students.
The class as a whole may choose activities which include volleyball,
kickball, roller-blading, golf, pickleball, ultimate frisbee, badminton,
basketball, floor hockey, dodgeball, table tennis, soccer, two-hand
touch football, sand volleyball, softball or tennis. Two or three
weeks are spent on each activity. Depending on the activity taught,
the instructor will decide which skill test will be used for evaluation
purposes.
AEROBICS/CONDITIONING

This class is fitness oriented and will involve a variety
of activities. Emphasis will be on conditioning type activities
such as aerobics, step aerobics, tae bo and weights. First semester
will be primarily step aerobics/low impact work, while second semester
will cover high intensity cardio and kickboxing. We will also include
core training involving exercise balls, hand and free weights, pilates
and circuit training.
CORE CONDITIONING

Prerequisite: Females Only
This class is open only to females interested in developing muscular
strength and endurance through weight training and other methods
of conditioning such as pilates and exercise balls. Proper spotting
and lifting techniques will be stressed, as well as the development
of cardiovascular endurance and flexibility. The class will be offered
period 4 or 8. All students will be required to create a personal
fitness plan and complete the pre and post Fitnessgram assessment,
which is part of the Certificate of Initial Mastery for Physical
Education.
NETS & RACQUETS
PE .5 Credit (Fall Only)

Prerequisite: Transportation to Courtsports West in the morning
This class offers a wide variety of activities that use either
a net or racquet. We will be going to Courtsports West. The cost
for is $15 and includes equipment.
FITNESS ASSESSMENT, TRAINING & WELLNESS
PE .5 Credit

This class is designed for and required for students in the Personal
Fitness Strand of the Health Services CAM. Students will become
informed consumers who can make informal and effective decisions
about fitness, health and wellness. Each student will learn how
to assess fitness, evaluate results and develop a personal fitness
plan based on individual results. In addition, students will be
required to complete an internship in the Lancer Fitness Center
during the semester and will have the opportunity to work with staff,
students and community members who use the fitness center. This
class can be used as a selective for students in the Clinical Strand
of the Health Services CAM.
ADVANCED PE

Prerequisite: Coach’s recommendation needed
NOTE: Student athletes must be enrolled in and passing five other
classes, equivalent to 2.5 credits, in addition to Advanced PE in
order to be eligible for participation. A student may take this
class only once for 2.5 PE credit. If a student repeats this class,
it will be for elective credit only.
Advanced PE class is for students interested in a particular school
athletic program. The coach’s recommendation is needed. The
purpose is to work on specific skills for a particular sport and/or
a weight-training program that will aid the athlete for that particular
sport. The class will be held for the nine weeks prior to the start
of the official practice.

PE ASSISTANT

Prerequisite: Teacher approval and signature required
Students interested in being a student assistant must have teacher
approval before adding this class. A special form is required and
may be obtained from the Physical Education teacher. Duties may
include demonstrating skills or exercises, leading warm-ups, setting
up and taking down of equipment, cleaning equipment or mats, supervising
fitness center, computer skills, making copies, officiating, etc.
