ARTS & COMMUNICATION — CAM


Overview

In The Arts and Communication CAM, students can choose to work in one of several focus areas. These include Fine Arts (drawing, ceramics, photography), Graphic Design, Video and Film, Radio Broadcasting, Journalism and Music. Students choose an area of study that meets their interest. Teachers work closely with students using a curriculum that is based on standards rather than seat time. Students have an increased responsibility to meet standards, work independently, and forge working partnerships with mentors and the larger community.

Requirements:
• Completion of the following curriculum hours:
• A minimum of 15 credits in any one focus area
• 5 credit hours of Portfolio class
• 10 credit hours of the Humanities class
• Completed final project, portfolio and internship (senior year)

HUMANITIES

This course balances literature and the fine and performing arts and has an interdisciplinary focus. It integrates cultural components of both western and non-western units of study. This course satisfies the expectations of the 4J District humanities requirement. Students will be involved in multiple research-based projects, reading several novels, and studying the role of arts in different cultures and historical time periods.

This course is specifically intended for those students who are completing their CAM in Arts and Communications. In this projects class, students will complete an internship, create a portfolio, meet career related standards and work on their final project which will be presented at the end of their senior year. In their internship experience, students will work with an employer in the workplace, either working directly with an artist, or in an art-related field in the community such as architecture, graphic design, management or publishing.

PUBLICATIONS/THE LAUREATE

Work with classmates to create a publication in an area of your interest. Possible ideas include the Laureate, a science magazine, a literary magazine, a hip hop magazine, a music magazine, or a magazine celebrating the art of drama. Students in this class will learn about layout, writing for publication, editing, producing and working as a team.

YEARBOOK

Prerequisite: Instructor consent

This class produces and sells a complete and accurate yearbook. Class members develop a theme, work on the layout and design of the book, write, edit copy and take pictures. Students will use PageMaker to publish on desktop computer. Layout and desktop publishing skills are taught. Students are expected to work independently, take responsibility and work outside of class to meet deadlines.

GALLERY MANAGERS

Prerequisite: Instructor consent and interview process

Selected students will be in charge of Churchill’s Art Gallery. Students will be expected to organize shows, mat artwork, keep records, update display cases and act as liaisons between community galleries and the school. Students are expected to meet deadlines, work independently and be available to work at school outside of class hours. This is a school-to-work study project with internship credit.

ADVANCED VIDEO PRODUCTION

Prerequisite: Multimedia or Communications SLC and instructor consent

Through participation in this year-long class, students will have the opportunity to explore personal interests including news production, 3D animation, etc. Students will be required to:

• Complete one community project per semester
• Complete personal projects
• Work on Lancer Communications projects
• Teach one lesson plan in an area of interest
• Formally present one project to the class

INDEPENDENT RADIO BROADCASTING

ADVANCED RADIO BROADCASTING

This course is a self-paced class in which students can develop skills in preparing for broadcasts and strengthening on-air practices. Technical writing of professional letters, a resume, news writing and underwriting announcements will be required, as will the use of appropriate technology for research and production. Students will produce and record a radio show as their culminating project.

MULTIMEDIA

An overview of the field, this introductory course provides a basis for creating multimedia projects in all possible courses. You will work with Graphical User Interfaces, design web pages, scan for multimedia, digitize sound, digitize and edit video, and be introduced to animation. The integration of course materials is through the use of multimedia presentation packages. Emphasis is on the uses of technology within multimedia, the process of developing interactive multimedia projects, an overview of the multimedia field, and the impact of multimedia upon various societal segments.

BASIC DESIGN

Students will learn the basic elements of graphic design and its history and function in contemporary society. Students will examine the various career options in design and will complete a job shadow experience. Understanding and application of design elements and principles and visual analysis are emphasized. Students will work with various media in their exploration of the growing importance of visual communication in this culture. Lab Fee: $15.00

COMPUTER GRAPHICS I

Prerequisite: Basic Design is strongly recommended
A course in computer literacy, which explores terminology and trends in computer generated graphic design. This course focuses on learning application software such as Macromedia Freehand, Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe PageMaker. Students will study design and principles and techniques, audience targeting, layout and typography. Students will learn through hands-on projects and critiques as well as written assignments.

COMPUTER GRAPHICS II

Prerequisite: Computer Graphics I and consent of the instructor

A course in computer-generated graphic design in which students will study advanced design techniques, advertising, packaging, logo design and photo manipulation. Students will work extensively with Macromedia Freehand and Adobe PhotoShop. Students will learn through hands on projects and critiques as well as written assignments.

CHURCHILL GRAPHIC PRODUCTION

Prerequisite: Computer Graphics I and II, and instructor consent

This is a course in computer-generated design in which students will use the skills and programs learned in Computer Graphics I and II to produce artwork for actual clients. Students will learn through hands on design, critique, presentation, and peer evaluation. Students will work with Macromedia Freehand, Adobe PhotoShop, and other software. Lab Fee $10.00

CONCERT CHOIR

Prerequisite: Audition and/or instructor consent

This ensemble will provide for advanced singers to become exposed to the literature written especially for them. The class is designed for beginners as well as experienced singers. Music will be drawn from many eras and will provide a performance-rehearsal experience for those who wish to sing this literature. Basic tone production, theory, ear training, and history of the rehearsal literature will be included with the course.
Cost: $15.00 per semester and performance outfit

WIND ENSEMBLE

Prerequisites: Audition and instructor consent

Wind Ensemble is open to musicians who have progressed to a higher level of playing and have a sincere interest in making music at an advanced level. This band is an “advanced” band and will play a variety of difficult literatures equal to student's ability. Private lessons are encouraged for students wishing to perform with the Wind Ensemble. Members of the Wind Ensemble have the opportunity of participating in Pep Band, which will perform at home basketball games, pep assemblies and other “school spirit” events.

ORCHESTRA

Prerequisite: Previous orchestra experience

The orchestra is open to string instrument players with previous experience. The repertoire is varied and includes standard orchestral literature from the l7th through the 20th Century. Individuals are given the opportunity to participate in solo and ensemble competitions and to audition for All-State and All-Northwest Orchestra.

Often, outstanding high school musicians are featured as soloists with the orchestra. Interested piano students should contact the instructor to determine if there is a vacancy. Career credit may be earned through this class.

DRAWING I

This class is designed for the student who wants to learn the fundamentals of drawing. Students will explore a variety of techniques in drawing while experimenting with different mediums, such as pencil, pen and charcoal. The beginning of class will focus on the basic elements of drawing like line and value. As students develop these skills, they will be introduced to perspective and composition. Students will learn through hands-on projects and critiques as well as written assignments. Assignments outside of class are to be expected. Lab Fee $15.00

DRAWING II

Prerequisite: Drawing I

This class is for students who want to continue refining their drawing skills. The class will build upon the techniques taught in Drawing I, as well as introduce new techniques of drawing. Students will also have an opportunity to work with a variety of drawing mediums, such as inks, pastels and colored pencils. Students will learn through hands-on projects and critiques as well as written assignments. Lab Fee $15.00

AP DRAWING

Prerequisite: Drawing I and II and/or instructor consent

Students will spend the year creating a portfolio of work to be submitted for review in the spring. The students will address three major concerns: a sense of quality in his/her work, concentration on a particular visual interest or problem and the need for breadth in formal, technical and expressive areas. The AP course is designed for students who are seriously interested in the study of art and who will most likely enter a higher-level art program. Lab Fee: $15.00

CERAMICS I

Basic procedures and processes unique to ceramics will be introduced and skill in forming and finishing clay work will be the outcome of this course. Students will learn to make judgments about the aesthetic quality of ceramic forms and mastery of the core concepts will be required. Techniques in hand building will be taught and students will study the role of ceramics in other cultures.

CERAMICS II

Prerequisites: Ceramics I

The focus of this course is to learn and practice basic wheel throwing techniques in order to create simple cylinder and bowl shapes. Students in this course will continue working with hand building; glazing and firing techniques to produce finished pieces of functional and/or sculptural ceramics.

CERAMICS III

Prerequisite: Ceramics II

This course is for advanced art students who want to continue their wheel throwing and/or hand building experience and work on more advanced and sophisticated projects. They will also do glaze experiments and participate in field trips and work with guest artists.

PHOTOGRAPHY I

9, 10, 11, 12

This is a course in basic photographic techniques. Areas of emphasis include composition, camera functions and developing. Students will also learn how to use Adobe PhotoShop as it applies to photographic principles. No prerequisite is required. Students provide their own cameras.
Lab Fee: $15.00.

PHOTOGRAPHY II

Prerequisite: Photography I

This is a semester long course focusing on advanced photographic techniques. Class projects are centered around students learning new creative and technical skills with the camera and in the darkroom. Students will also learn how to manipulate photographic images on the computer. Students provide their own cameras. Lab Fee: $15.00
