LANCER COMMUNICATIONS
Lancer Communications is a technology-based program that integrates four curricular
divisions: Media Arts, Graphic Arts, Communication Technologies and Computer
Science. The program emphasizes contextual learning in a real world environment
through involvement in a variety of classes and student experiences. Student
individualism, responsibility, teamwork, and problem solving are fostered by
the project-based and hands-on curriculum. Participation in the program exposes
students to curriculum that will meet state standards for the Arts & Communication
CAM and will challenge a variety of student skill levels.
COMPUTER TECHNICIAN & USER SUPPORT SERVICES I AF, OS .5 Credit
9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Application Computer Technician Services is
one of the prerequisites for entry into Churchill High School’s Computer Technician
Program and is designed to provide students with hands-on training in the specific
features and maintenance procedures for Churchill High School’s computer network.

Hardware Maintenance • Troubleshooting
COMPUTER TECHNICIAN & USER SUPPORT SERVICES IB AF, OS .5 Credit
9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Computer Technician and User Support
Services IA This is an independent study available for students interested in
continuing their study of technology. Students will meet with the instructor
once at the beginning of the term, submit project plans, and schedule check-ins
as necessary for the topic.

COMPUTER TECHNICIAN

Students will work with Lancer Communications faculty to design, implement
and evaluate a computer-related project that addresses a need within Churchill
High School. Students will also assist with building support issues as needed.

Prerequisite: Computer Technician Services IA, II, III and instructor
consent Students will identify a need in the community that can be addressed
with computer technology. Students will then design, implement, and evaluate
their solution with the support of Lancer Communications faculty and a community

TEAM I AF, OS .5 Credit 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Teacher
recommendation & one of the following: Computer Graphics, Tech Services
I, Journalism, Technical Writing, or Multimedia Students with skills in any
one of the following: writing, leadership, html, graphic design, programming
or multimedia will work closely together to maintain and develop the CHS web

WEB TEAM II AF, OS .5 Credit 11, 12 Prerequisite: Web Team
I Students will be responsible for resolving questions about standards and approaches
used by the team, passing along specific technical info to Web Team I students,
the development of advanced technical and organizational skills, and exploration
of alternative technical solutions.
WEB TEAM III AF, OS .5 Credit 12 Prerequisite:
Web Team I and II Students will continue to pursue areas of technical
interest in web development and participate in the definition, implementation,
and evaluation of projects adopted by the team.
ADVANCED VIDEO PRODUCTION AF, OS 1.0 Credit 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite:
Multimedia and instructor consent Through participation in this year-long class,
students will have the opportunity to explore personal interests including news
production, 3D animation, etc. Students will be required to:
• Complete one
community project per semester • Complete personal projects • Work on Lancer
Communications projects • Teach one lesson plan in an area of interest • Formally
present one project to the class

INDEPENDENT RADIO BROADCASTING AA .25 Credit 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite:
Instructor consent Students in this class operate KRVM, 92V. May be repeated
for credit.
ADVANCED RADIOBROADCASTING AA .5 Credit 9, 10, 11, 12 This course
is a self-paced class in which students can develop skill at preparing for broadcasts
and strengthening on-air practices. Technical writing of professional letters,
a resumé, news writing and underwriting announcements will be required,
as will the use of appropriate technology for research and production. Students
will produce and record a radio show as their culminating project.
BASIC DESIGN FA .5 Credit 9, 10, 11, 12 Students will learn the basic
elements of graphic design and its history and function in contemporary society.
Students will examine the various career options in design and will complete
a job shadow experience. Understanding and application of design elements and
principles and visual analysis are emphasized. Students will work with various
media in their exploration of the growing importance of visual communication
in this culture. Lab Fee: $15.00
COMPUTER GRAPHICS I FA .5 Credit 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite:
Basic Design is strongly recommended A course in computer literacy, which explores
terminology and trends in computer generated graphic design. This course focuses
on learning application software such as Freehand and Photoshop. Students will
study design and principles and techniques, audience targeting, layout and typography.
Students will learn through hands-on projects and critiques as well as written
assignments. Lab Fee: $15.00 COMPUTER GRAPHICS II FA .5 Credit 9, 10, 11,
12 Prerequisite: Computer Graphics I and consent of the instructor. A course
in computer-generated graphic design in which students will study advanced design
techniques, advertising, packaging, logo design and photo manipulation. Students
will work extensively with Macromedia Freehand and Adobe PhotoShop. Students
will learn through hands on projects and critiques as well as written assignments.
Lab Fee: $15.00 GRAPHIC PRODUCTION/
COMPUTER GRAPHICS III FA .5 Credit 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Computer
Graphics I and II, and instructor consent. This is a course in computer-generated
design in which students will use the skills and programs learned in Computer
Graphics I and II to produce artwork for actual clients. Students will learn
through hands on design, critique, presentation, and peer evaluation. Students
will work with Macromedia Freehand, Adobe PhotoShop, and other software.
PHOTOSHOP FA .5 Credit 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Computer
Graphics I and Instructor consent - Computer Graphics II recommended An advanced
course focusing on Adobe Photoshop techniques, photographic manipulation, composite
imaging, scanning and retouching. Students will create a digital portfolio.

MULTIMEDIA AF, OS .5 Credit 9, 10, 11, 12 An overview of
the field, this introductory course provides a basis for creating multimedia
projects in all possible courses. You will be exposed to draw and paint programs,
photo editing software, virtual reality software, digitizing and editing video,
web page design and animation. The integration of course materials is through
the use of multimedia presentation packages. Emphasis is on the uses of technology
within multimedia, the process of developing interactive multimedia projects,
an overview of the multimedia field, and the impact of multimedia upon various
societal segments.
PUBLICATIONS/THE LAUREATE LA, CE 1.0 Credit 11, 12 Work
with classmates to create a publication in an area of your interest. Possible
ideas include the Laureate, a science magazine, a literary magazine, a hip hop
magazine, a music magazine, a magazine celebrating the art of drama. Students
in this class will learn about layout, writing for publication, editing, producing
and working as a team.
YEARBOOK FA 1.0 Credit 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Instructor consent
This class produces and sells a complete and accurate yearbook. Class members
develop a theme, work on the layout and design of the book, write, edit copy
and take pictures. Students will use PageMaker to publish on desktop computer.
Layout and desktop publishing skills are taught. Students are expected to work
independently, take responsibility and work outside of class to meet deadlines.
