Hello, Churchill families and students;
As we head into winter break, I hope that each of you are able to rest, relax, and recoup from the fast pace of school and life these past few weeks. I also hope that the end of 2022 is a time of reflection, celebration, and dreaming or planning for the wonderful opportunities to come in 2023.
For some in community, I know this time of year is hard, please know that we are here to help where we can, plus here are some resources that could help. ( Winter Holiday Resource List 2022 (English & Spanish) )
I am excited for what it so come in 2023! I don’t know what all will happen, but I do know that more fun, excitement and amazing things will happen here at Churchill High School because of the amazing community, staff, students and families we have here in our area. May your winter break be refreshing, and see you soon in the new year!

School and Student Information
School and front office and school closed December 19, 2022 – January 3, 2023
The front office and school will be closed starting Monday, December 19, 2022 through Tuesday, January 3, 2023. On Tuesday the 3rd, all staff will return to school for training in the AM, and classroom prep before students return on Wednesday. Classes, the front office, and the school will re-open on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 to welcome students back from Winter break and the new year. Please feel free to call and leave a message on our front office phone, or email your student’s teachers with questions. We will return these messages in the New Year when staff returns on the 3rd of January.
New SignageOver break facilities crews will be headed to our athletics fields to take down old signs and replace them with newly revised and consistent language. This change is coming on the heels of feedback that was communicated about how our citizenry did not have consistent information or expectations as to who and what was allowed. These signs will help create a revised sense of consistency. Here is what the new signage will look like: |

Mind Body Divergence Alliance
Mind Body Divergence Alliance is an affinity group for students with…
- Neurodivergence identities such as ADHD, Autism, or other neurological conditions
- Physical disabilities identities: limb differences, wheelchair users, etc.
It’s a place to get to know fellow students and the community and for changing the stigma of mind/body differences.

Building on a Strong Foundation December 2022 Education Update
Registration Open for Uplift Events for Students Applications are now being accepted for the 2023 Uplift by Youth Era events. Uplift is a live, trauma-informed, virtual summit for teens (14-19). Participants will join youth from around the world to master their mental health, learn how to support their friends and how to build community. Uplift is 100% virtual and completely free for Oregon high school students thanks to funding through the Oregon Health Authority. The 4 day training happens outside of school hours, typically during school breaks, and requires no demands on teachers’ limited time. Students earn a $75 stipend for participation and chances to win lots of prizes.
Encourage students to go to the Uplift website to register for the February event for the upcoming events in February and March. If you have questions or are interested in a class/school zoom presentation, email Maj Bonnet, Uplift Outreach, or call (541) 335-1367.
Sign up for ASVAB Testing
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) will be given to interested high school students at least 16 years old. The test is on Wednesday, February 15th, 2022. 1:00–3:30 pm. Registered students will be excused from class with a permission slip. Students will need to bring their student computer to take the test. I recommend that students taking the test have taken math at least through Algebra II, but it is not required. Test preparation materials can be accessed at this link, in the counseling hallway, or on the table outside the School-to-Career office in the STEM building.

New CHS Athletic Website
We are excited to announce our new athletics website, www.chslancers.com. This site will be home to articles about, photos of, and information for all of our Churchill teams. In addition, each team will have pages to showcase their schedule (complete with game results) and roster. Start visiting now to get yourself acclimated to the site!
In addition, go ahead and get signed up for Alerts for your child’s’ team(s). This will allow you to receive the latest updates about changing practice times, game locations, and other important information. (find the “Sing up for Alerts” button at the top of the page in the menu bar)
We hope to see your support, both in person and online, for our Lancers.
Pre-College Mentors at CHS
We are fortunate to have SAIL (Summer Academy to Inspire Learning) pre-college mentors on our campus. They can help students research colleges and scholarships, fill out applications, answer questions about what college is like, register for standardized tests, and much more. They will be located in the College & Career Center. Students can see them on a drop-in basis (schedule below) or arrange to have a set time to meet with them regularly.
- Monday: 10:30 am–3:30 pm
- Tuesday: 11:00 am–3:30 pm
- Wednesday: 8:00 am–3:30 pm
- Thursday: 9:00 am–3:30 pm
We hope students will take advantage of this amazing and valuable opportunity.
SENIOR FAMILIES
With Winter Break right around the corner, there are some things senior families should keep in mind.
If a student requires a letter of recommendation or transcript to meet a college admissions deadline in January, they need to request them now!
Letters of Recommendation
We ask that you give the recommender a minimum of two weeks to write thoughtful comments!

Transcript Requests
If you need them (a lot of colleges do not want them) transcripts requests can take time! Request yours now to ensure they are processed in time.
Financial Aid Reminders
Senior families;
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Oregon Student Aid Application (ORSAA) are available online. The FAFSA and ORSAA are forms that seniors fill out to apply for money for college. Apply early as some funds are limited. You will fill out the FAFSA OR the ORSAA.

The Oregon Promise Application is now open. The Oregon Promise is funding from the State of Oregon that helps students pay tuition at any Oregon Community College. The application is not long or time-consuming, although students must fill out the FAFSA or ORSAA to be considered. We recommend that students fill out the Oregon Promise application even if going to a community college is not their first choice. We don’t want you to miss deadlines! The College and Career Center needs volunteers like you!
Volunteers are needed for the College and Career Center. If you have a spare hour or two a week to help us, consider joining our team. Do you just love managing data and spreadsheets? We need you. Are crafts your thing? We need you too. Are you good at coordinating programs and reaching out to community members? We need a community service coordinator. Does writing make you smile? We need someone to write posts for social media, announcements, emails, etc. Need a flexible schedule? Some tasks can be done entirely remotely. But, if you want to immerse yourself in our active campus, you are welcome. Would you rather help us on an as-need basis? Yep, we always need extra hands.

City of Eugene Teen Empowerment Programs
Check out the City of Eugene Teen Empowerment Programs! (printable pdf attached).
Offered to all interested youth and teens. All are FREE of charge and offer snacks. Registration opens at 9:00 am on December 13 to participate in these free programs taking place from January through April. Space is limited, so sign up early!
Programs collaborate with community partners to provide free low barrier, inclusive, out-of-school-time recreation and enrichment activities for youth. Experiential project-based activities empower teens by building life and job skills, offering access to peer and adult mentors, and participating in community service opportunities.
