Churchill Families,

Today was grading day for our teachers, and they have been hard at work finishing up correcting tests, reading essays, reviewing mid-term projects, and entering grades.  Next week we will work on sending these mid-term grades home to you for review.   Remember, your student's grades can also be accessed through ParentVue or by requesting to be an "observer" on your student's Canvas from their teachers.  If you don't know how to access these options, please either call our front office or email your student's teachers.

As we head into our last 9 weeks of school, I am a little shocked at how fast this year has gone, but also excited for what is still to come.  Spring is always a fun and busy time - athletics, the Spring Musical ("Mean Girls"), Jazz Cafe, Forecasting for next school year, 8th-grade visits and parent nights, AP/IB/SBAC Testing, our Spring Festival at school, and Graduation.  (Just to name a few things).   Needless to say, springtime is here and we have a lot to look forward to.

Finally, last night, we hosted our final Unified\ Basketball Game here at Churchill against South Eugene's Unified Basketball Team.  It was such an amazing night!  Our stands were filled with cheering spectators and families, our Pep Band played throughout the game, our cheerleaders cheered on the teams, and our student section supported their peers with chants, claps, and signs.  It really was an amazing show of unity, support, and collaboration between student-athletes with or without intellectual and developmental disabilities.  There was no one in the gym who didn't have a huge smile on their face during the entire game!!   Thank you to Alia Burkholder and Michelle Dunn for all your hard work in creating this opportunity for our students, we are so happy and blessed by all the work you have done.  Play Unified!!!

Go, Lancers!

Churchill Website Updates

Our website has a new look. 4J is moving all school websites to a new platform and Churchill's website was updated this week. We've tried to keep things in the same place so that you can find all of the information you are used to seeing on our website.

Please have patience as we continue to refine the new site. If you notice any errors, broken links, or outdated information, please let us know. Email churchill@4j.lane.edu with your feedback.

Scheduling for '24 – '25

It is Scheduling Time at Churchill! Students will be choosing their classes for next school year (we call it Forecasting) over the next few weeks. Please talk with your students about the importance of taking this seriously and make sure they attend their Advisory classes, as this is where the scheduling will happen. All of the information about Forecasting will be on the CHS website: Go to Students, then Academics, then Scheduling. Students will have the opportunity at the beginning of May to verify their choices before we lock in their schedules; please check in with your student to make sure they are on top of their process. Thanks for your support, and have your student reach out to their counselor if they have any questions.

Attendance and Hall Pass Zones Information and Expectations

Hall Pass Plan (PDF)

Hall Pass Zones

  • New Hall Passes in all classrooms are color-coded.
  • The color of the Hall Pass indicates which bathroom you are allowed to use during class time.
  • Teachers have a laminated copy of the color-coded zone map to display with their new hall passes.
  • Colored reminder signs are posted on all the bathrooms to help us all get used to the new system
  • Campus monitors and admin are checking that students with hall passes during class time are in the correct zone of the campus.

What to Expect from Teachers

  • Students will not be out of class for more than 5 minutes.
  • Hall passes are to be worn visibly.
  • Only 1 – 2 students are out of class at a time.
  • Last 10 minutes of class, students are to stay in class.
  • Green passes will be given to students going somewhere other than the bathroom or water.

**The privilege to use the restroom during class may be revoked if students cannot follow these expectations, and or the teacher determines breaks from class are being abused

Consequences

  • Meeting with teacher and student.
  • Calls and emails home from teachers.
  • Lunch detention.
  • Meeting with an administrator and the student.
  • Meeting with an administrator, the student, and the family.
  • Attendance contract.
  • Potentially losing bathroom privilege during class time, excluding emergencies.

*We want students in classes to learn, and when you are gone for extended amounts of time you are missing valuable information and instruction.

Yellow Jacket Trapping Notification

Every summer, yellow jackets become a safety issue for 4J students, staff, and community members, requiring hazardous nest removal, extensive labor, and occasional pesticide treatments. As a preventative measure, 4J Facilities will be placing non-toxic pheromone yellow jacket traps out at schools to reduce the number of colonies that are established on campuses annually.

Though these traps are intrinsically safe for staff, students, and beneficial pollinators, they are considered a pesticide by ODA, and the district is required to send out notifications, just as with other pesticide applications. All schools are part of this program.

Student Computer Upgrade, March 2024

All students must upgrade their student computers to the latest version of the operating system. This upgrade is not optional.

This is a big upgrade that may take the computer several hours to complete. Please carefully follow the instructions in the quicksheet below. Do not attempt to complete this update using a cellular signal or hotspot or while you are at school. Make sure your computer is in a safe place where it can remain plugged in and will not be disturbed during the upgrade.

The directions mention Ventura. Your computer may refer to Sonoma. The instructions are the same.

DO NOT SKIP STEPS 1 – 16! Quicksheet – Upgrade macOS 2023 (PDF)

If you are unable to complete the upgrade at home, please visit the tech support office in Churchill room F40 and be prepared to be without your laptop for 2 hours or more.

Become a Churchill Community Responder

A Churchill Community Responder is a volunteer that responds to “alerts” sent by the 15th Night Coordinator for needs specific to CHS students that have not been met by internal school resources. These types of alerts would be for items such as clothing, shoes, small household items, food, or bedding.

A Churchill Community Responder would receive a text message indicating a need. If the Responder can provide the need, they respond to the text message and work with the CHS Coordinator to secure and deliver the item to Churchill High School.
Contact Trista Neuman at Neuman_t@4j.lane.edu.

You can donate items for our students at any time. Donations are accepted at the front office, or you can support our students by ordering items from the Churchill Amazon Wish List.

New Teen Programs at Your YMCA! Take a Look at Our Spring 2024 Offerings!

The Eugene Family YMCA is once again operating our CIT (counselor in training) program. It will be open this summer to 10th-12th graders. CITs can volunteer and participate in our many summer camps alongside YMCA staff who will foster their leadership skills and encourage them to take part in our community. This is a great program for any youth interested in working with kids, teaching, outdoor school, or as a camp counselor someday. It involves lots of interaction with campers, sunny days outside, and so much fun!

The link to our application is here — due by April 30th and requires a guardian’s signature and at least 1 reference. Selected applicants will attend an interview and staff training.

Explore more programs on our summer camp page here

Eugene YMCA Child Care Camps for Preschoolers, K-5th, Tweens, and Teens focus on summer fun, plenty of sunshine, and empowering all youth to embody the core values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, and Caring. We have transportation to field trips. Youth get to swim, play sports and games, do activities and crafts, sing songs, and learn! Counselor in training CIT program
