8, 2004
Return to Minutes Index
In attendance: Doug, tim, Grant, Lance, Jenny, Audrey, Mike, Tom,
Kate,
Katy, Jennifer, Betsy, Cindy, Julie
Scheduling Timelines:
- Doug passed out and explained: includes various activities to
be completed
throughout the course of the year; good information to have (see
handout for explanation of dates and times).
Gates Grant: Dennis (application deadline Feb. 21st)
- Dennis and Helen attended a Gates Grant conference and are
thinking about applying for Gates Grant.
- Dennis wants staff input. Question posed: should we go ahead
and apply for the grant? How flexible is the grant?
- What direction do we want to head as a school and does this
grant fit into our future direction? When should we discuss this
as a staff.
Curriculum Council vote
- Discuss this with departments at 7:45 onWednesday.
High School Graduation Requirements
- Dennis.
- Discussion regarding what we should be doing legally to document
completion of graduation requirements.
- What we would like to see in terms of what skills students
leave
high school with and how do we document this.
Ideas:
- Electronic Profile
- Paper model: including a list of what needs to be accomplished
Current Plan and Profile: Betsy (see Betsy's handouts and packets).
- Churchill currently has most comprehensive profile in district
(kuddos)
Includes:
- Freshman/Sophomore community service contract (this is signed
by
parents and lives in career center).
- Career Exploration Planning Guide for Sophomores (green packet):
Skills assessment and initial career exploration. Later includes
in
depth exploration of three careers.
- Career and College Center Planning Guide for Juniors (red packet):
Begin to seriously plan for the future; college or otherwise.
Includes
resume preparation, self assessment for career planning,
extracurricular activities, etc.
- Career Center Planning guide for Seniors (blue packet): Helps
students lay out what steps they will take to complete their career
or
college goals. Seniors often visit career center 20 or more times
during the course of their senior year while working to complete
the
checklists in the packet.
- Questions:
- Lance (good question): What do we need to do that goes above
and beyond
what Betsy has already in place?
- Answer: compare what we are doing to what the law states we
should be
doing. This is the discussion that we need to begin to have.
- Is it fair for Betsy to be documenting all of the graduation
requirement information. Thoughts:
- Can teachers be more responsible for following up with what
Betsy
is already doing?
- Color coding is good!! Each year a student is here, they have
a
specific color. This makes it very easy to quickly look a t what
has
been completed and when.
- Concerns expressed about how to catch students who slip through
the
cracks.
- How are we going to make sure that ALL students have the experience
that Betsy offers in the career center.
- Are we adhering to what the state has set forth as the legal
requirements for graduation...is what we have enough?
CIM: Doug
- Science has started testing (Chemistry) and all students thus
far have
passed
Jenifer Pleus Funding request:
- Decision: Make this a priority to discuss this next meeting.
Doug must
do his homework.
