Operations Minutes: September 28, 2004

Return to Minutes Index

Those present included Don Cataldo, Cindy Sainz, Marilyn Curtis, Audrey Wigmore,
Hareem Park, Teresa Hilkey, Dennis Biggerstaff, and Karla Nelson.

I.  Leadership

  • Hareem reported that 9th grade elections were held
today and that sophomores are working on Homecoming activities.

II.  White Day Discussion

  • Marilyn Curtis provided a historical
perspective on the White Day.  IHS has one day in fall and one in
spring where they have all-school assemblies.  From the beginning,
Churchill has wanted to make sure that IHS alpha and omega days aligned
with Red and Blue days.  White day in the fall was a compromise
    solution to maintain that balance.
  • The group discussed several options including structuring some
type of activity for all Churchill students on that day.  Options
discussed included community service day, career day, mini-courses,
late start with an afternoon activity.  It was suggested that we might
want to form a committee to look at the issue and plan early.  We will
    discuss further next week.

III.  Staff Meeting Agenda

We reviewed a draft of the October 13 staff meeting.  Agenda items include:

  • United Way, committee reports
  • Eric Jensen Brain Research Team presentation
  • Group Agreements
  • Staff Process Advocate.
Agenda will be finalized next week.

IV.  Attendance

  • It was reported that a few teachers are not taking
attendance at all and that some are having difficulty with the Esis
system.  Don suggested that we contact CIS to see if teachers could
have more than one day to go back and correct attendance.  Dennis will
    contact CIS.

V. Field Trip Notice

  • Teachers need to be reminded that we need lists
of students involved in field trips e-mailed to all staff at least two
days in advance.  Trips should be approved by operations in advance.
Audrey suggested that it would be efficient if we had a template form
on the web that teachers could use so that the same information goes
out each time.  Dennis will ask technology folks if this is a
    possibility.
  • The issue was also raised of teachers moving their classes to
an alternate location.  If possible, the office should be notified (in
case we are trying to locate a student); teachers should also leave a
    note on their door.

VI.  Supplies

  • Dennis mentioned that he had heard that there were
problems with the current system of supply distribution.
  • Some teachers
have felt that they had obstacles to securing supplies or that supplies
were not available on weekends (ie. transparencies, toner).
  • Office staff also reports that many teachers are not e-mailing request in
advance and are sending students are  lining up in the morning.
  • After an open discussion, several possibilities were discussed; these
included, storing some extra transparencies and toner in the library,
providing staff access to the supply room before 8:20 a.m., and having
someone provide service to teachers for supplies each morning.
  • No action taken at this time, but we will come back to this next week.

VII.  Open Agenda

        A. Items referred to Teresa Hilkey
                1.  Staff Dues -- question was raised in terms of who
decides when and how these are spent.  Karla does not always get
information; a number of staff members do not contribute.  Teresa and
Karla will work together on this.
                2.  Special Education - problem of teachers not having
access to information about their students.  Cindy reported that SST is
discussing this issue and trying to come up with a communication method
that informs teachers without violating student records laws.
                3.  Copy Machine - several suggestions including
purchasing a new large copier to purchasing a smaller copier which the
office could use for single copies.  We cannot afford another large
copier, but other options can be explored.
                4.  Military on Campus - This issue was raised last
year.  Military recruiters have a right to be on campus as long as they
follow our guidelines.
        B.  Cindy Sainz Items
                1.  Fund Raising - folks need to be reminded that
fund-raising events which impact the school day should go through
Operations and Leadership before they occur.
                2.  League of Women Voters want to set up a voter
registration table on campus. This was approved.
