Open Agenda - All

  1. Helen mentioned that we need to be true to our start time. From now on we will begin with snacks at 3:20 and begin the meeting on time at 3:30. Please do what you can to get here on time.
  2. Don raised a question regarding the parking lot situation that was reviewed by the city in the last few years. The issue has seemingly been shelved and needs to be revisited. Perhaps it can be added to a future agenda or passed on to Operations. Serious concerns abound on this issue. Let’s get it back on the agenda and taken care of before someone is seriously injured. Dennis will follow up on this.

Open House Debrief – Dennis and all

Dennis spoke about this. General feedback from parents was very positive. Evaluations support the success of this evening.

1. Suggestions for improvement

  • Later start time
  • More than 12 minutes per class
  • Spanish speaking escorts

2. Attendance: Up or down?

  • Difficult to tell
  • How can we track this in the future? Surveys, teacher attendance lists, pass out schedules beforehand.

3 .Latino Family Dinner

  • Turn-out a little low perhaps due to early start time
  • Put a Spanish speaker in the front office.

Parent Booster Club – Mary Lou and Dennis

  1. Would like to re-establish the Parent Council.
  2. In the meantime, the agenda of Booster Meetings will be altered slightly to: include site council minutes and general school information and then the more typical booster type activities and agendas.
  3. Dennis and Mary Lou would like the group to better represent our broader Churchill Community beyond athletic and club representation and to increase the overall number of parents involved.
  4. Next Booster Meeting is November 1st – Mary Lou would like to have Nov. 3rd Site Council Agenda to give the group some insight as to what we are doing in the near future.
  5. Don suggested that we each spend a few minutes searching for other high school booster clubs to find activities for fund raising that benefit the entire school community.

School Improvement Program – Update, Work, and Draft - Dennis

1. Dennis passed out a recap of the 2004 Staff Retreat. See handout for information.
2. Recap of last meetings’ work was also distributed. See handout for information.
3. Members broke into three groups to continue work on the School Improvement Program

  • Instructional Strategy
  • Literacy

4. Each group debriefed their discussions in a whole group setting.

  • Literacy – much of their work remained the same.
    • Continue Read Right
    • Progress Checks
    • Pass on strategies from Read Right to Gen Ed classes
    • District Assessing 9th grade baseline skills
    • Work within departments to align curriculum to include reading across the curriculum.
  • ii.Vision
    • Brainstormed concepts to be included in the mission statement.
    • Dennis will distribute these to individual departments and have them each craft mission statement examples.
    • Perhaps we should look at the work Springfield has done around a QEM.
  • iii.Instructional Strategy
    • Time was a topic of discussion
      • Time for sharing
        • Restructure the school day?
        • Devote 2-4 meetings to this topic
        • Release time
      • Time needs to be honored
